I found this. I'm not 100% sure if this is true or not but...it makes sence...
Forward:
They started off being the most populated clan thousands of years ago when the Hidden Air Village first started. However, as time went on, coupled with the suppression of the Council Seven, the degradation of people’s morals when confined within a single place for too long, as well as the conflicts in and between clans men; the Uzumaki family have dwindled until onto two per generation is given birth to, just to keep the clan running.
1st Generation:
Kentaku and Momutaku were twins but since Momutaku was born only a handful of minutes before his brother, he was placed as Uzumaki Prophet house. Kentaku married Dokudes Kyuko and given birth to both Tenka and Rika (who are both half breed Dokudes). When the couple partitioned against the Council Seven’s ruling and suppression of their own people, both were publicly executed in front of their own children. This is why Rika hates the Kuunoki so much.
2nd Generation:
Uzumaki Tenka took up the position of Prophet house master while his sister (after trying to do the same thing as her parents) was placed under house arrest for the rest of her life. She refused to marry no matter what people say. It wasn’t until her mid-thirties before the Hidden Air Village hosted a competition to find her a suitable husband that she finally wedded Fuujin Yakumo of the Hidden Cloud. Rika’s black hair contrasted against Yakumo’s bright blonde, which is why both her children ended up being blondes instead of dark haired. Yakumo left the Kuunoki when the Air between nations started up again, but this time, he never returned. Rika, with the help of her disciple – Tsunade – tried to perform a forbidden Jutsu to revive Yakumo’s dead body but the experiment failed. Two months later, Rika committed suicide, leaving both her children (Ruri and Yuuki) to the care of her older brother, Tenka.
3rd Generation:
Uzumaki Tenka disappeared half way through his ruling term of the Hidden Air village, leaving Ruri to take up the responsibility at the age of only 14 years old. With the help of her sister – Yuuki, her faithful servant – Kaga, and the support of the 10 Gate Guardians at the time, Ruri was able to make breakthroughs negotiating with the Council Seven about making changes within the Kuunoki. By far, Ruri is the most respected and highly acclaimed of all the Uzumaki Prophet masters in history, right next to the first Uzumaki Leader.
After the incident between a Dokudes and the Hyuuga Main House of the Hidden Leaf Village, Yuuki was sent to Konoha as an ambassador to calm the peace treaty between the two nations. There, she met and fell in love with Kasama Arashi, the newly claimed Fourth Hokage of the entire Hidden Leaf Village. Her marriage was NOT approved by the Council Seven and she was lucky that Ruri was able to persuade the Councillors NOT to sent the 10 Gate Guardians after her, instead, only sending Kaga to watch over Yuuki’s every move. Yuuki spent a year in the Fourth Hokage’s company, marrying him in secret with only the approval of Kaga from the Hidden Air as a representative.
However, their happy days came to an end when the Kyuubi no Kitsune suddenly appeared and started causing havoc in Konoha. The Fourth Hokage devised a special technique (ShikiFuuin) to use against the Kyuubi no Kitsune, making a blood pact with the God of Death (Shinigami) himself, sacrificing the user to seal such a powerful (S-Class) demon into the belly of a newly born host. However, Yuuki found out that not just any host will do. Due to the Kyuubi no Kitsune’s powerful and evil aura, the child (baby in a sense) had to have an incredible amount of Chakra and will to carry such a burden. Not all children will be able to survive such a technique being placed on them and Kasama was only able to perform the technique once so their choice over the child must be very specific.
In the end, they decided that they would use the (yet) unborn Naruto as the host. Since Naruto was the son of the 4th Hokage and an Uzumaki, he has the blood capable of containing such a powerful demon as Kyuubi no Kitsune. The couple waited several anxious days before Naruto was finally born and immediately wished away into the fro of battle. Yuuki – knowing that she would lose her husband and a part of her son no matter what she did, decided to partake in the battle anyway (even while she hadn’t completely recovered from the pregnancy). With Kaga’s help, Yuuki was able to make it to the battlefield. She helped her husband contain a struggling demon by summoning forth the demon weapons known as the Tenkun no Buki. Over five of those legendary weapons were used to entrap the Monstrous Demon so that Arashi can perform the Shiki Fuuin Jutsu without disturbance. As a result of her sacrifice, Yuuki died of blood lost even before her husband finished with the Jutsu. The Fourth Hokage, on the other hand, died straight after he completed the deadly Jutsu, sealing the demon into his own son, Naruto.
